This afternoon, I watched the 1973 dystopian science fiction movie, "Soylent Green," starring Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Connors and Edward G. Robinson (in his last film). Set in Manhattan in 2022, society has been decimated through overcrowding, poverty, and extreme unemployment. Food is in scarce supply. As a result, the citizenry is at the mercy of the massive Soylent Corporation which produces three types of food substances: Soylent Red and Soylent Yellow, and a new product, Soylent Green, made from high-energy plankton harvested from the world's oceans that is more nutritious than Red and Yellow, but in short supply.
The film is, of course, a cautionary tale about the effects of overpopulation and pollution. At the heart of the issue of feeding the masses, is a report commissioned by the Soylent Corporation, that we come to find out, concludes the oceans can not possibly be supplying enough protein to feed the population. I looked closely at my television (a screen shot is above) and noticed its title, Soylent Oceanographic Survey Report 2015 To 2019 Volume 1.
So, apparently, we are in the second year of Soylent Corporation's research study.
It's coming people. Soylent Green is coming. And we all know what that means...
